Great! Can't wait to compare notes.👍🏿 Thanks for following btw.
I'm also very interested in the story of #NegroLeagues players who played in #Japan a decade before #JackieRobinson integrated #MLB. You might have already read about them but sharing just in case:

Today in Labor History July 6, 1944: Four years before breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball, Jackie Robinson refused to move to the back of a military bus, leading to a court-martial. He was acquitted by an all-white jury of nine officers. Fortunately, the court proceedings prevented his deployment and he finished World War II without seeing combat. The following year, Branch Rickey began to recruit him to play for the Dodgers. When he asked Robinson if he could take the racist epithets that would likely be hurled at him, he said, “Are you looking for a Negro who is afraid to fight back?” Rickey said, “No, I’m looking for one with guts enough NOT to fight back.”

One third of the way through the season, the #OaklandAthletics are on a pace for an even 30 wins. This would easily be the worst season for a team in the modern #baseball era.
While there have technically been worse teams in history, the 1963 #NewYorkMets are really the standard-bearers here (liveball era, post-#JackieRobinson, expansion era), going 40-120 in their inaugural season.

Sports is meant to be entertainment, an escape from daily toils, our common love of the game binding us. Yet how can we be entertained when we look on the playing field and are so easily reminded about the lack of opportunity, the systems that create racial and gender bias? #Baseball #JackieRobinson #JackieRobinsonDay #LarryDoby #inclusion

On this day
He paved the way
And though I did not see him play
If not for him I could not say
These were the heroes of my youth.
So on this day I do give thanks
For the likes of Willie Mays and Ernie Banks
Fergie Jenkins, Bob Gibson
Sweet Swinging Billy Williams
Hank Aaron and the rest
Who followed him and passed the test.

April 15, 1947 - Jackie Roosevelt Robinson became the first African American to play in a major league baseball game in the 20th century. His stepping onto Ebbets Field in a Brooklyn Dodgers uniform broke the “color line,” the segregation of professional teams.
The International League in 1887 began a wave of League-wide black exclusion, & it had been complete since 1899, when Bill Galloway became the last African-American player in white organized ball (Woodstock, Ontario).

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
On April 10, 1947, Brooklyn Dodgers president Branch Rickey announced he had purchased the contract of #JackieRobinson from the Montreal Royals, paving the way for Robinson to become the first African American to play in the major leagues.
This is from historian Lee Wind.
He is writing about something that has as much to do with 20th century #Slavery in the US, and with the forgotten legacy of African-Americans in #baseball, as it does with same-sex couples in ancient history: The reality that powerful people shape narratives in real time to suit their own purposes.
In both realms--in ALL realms-- #history demands to be an ongoing discussion. Not an ancient pronouncement.

Today in Labor History March 21, 1946: The Los Angeles Rams signed Kenny Washington, the first professional African American football player in the U.S. since 1933. His father played baseball in the negro leagues. His uncle was the first black lieutenant in the LAPD. In college, he played both baseball and football. He was a teammate of Jackie Robinson’s at UCLA. Many people thought he was a better baseball player than Robinson. Leo Durocher supposedly offered him a contract to play major league baseball, but only if he played in Puerto Rico first, which Washington refused to do.
