My dad sat at my kitchen table and drank tea, and picked up my (still unread) copy of ‘s Gender Trouble, and started reading while I cooked dinner. I mentioned I got it because of her excellent introduction to the 2016 edition of but that her earlier work was infamous for being a bit heavy going.

And my dad is like, no, it makes sense to me. He read the conclusion first to see what the point was, read the sentence out loud and was like “makes sense!”

What’s more, reading her description of ‘differance’ and how it relates to binaries, reminded me of the reasoning I worked through when I first started to understand nonbinary gender. And, to be more specific and personal, my nonbinary gender. I’ve been feeling tentative about posting my theory about nonbinary and “other” genders because I know some of it is at odds with what I seem to understand trans theory

In recent interviews, Butler spoke about how she was not a very clear writer when she was younger so I expect the 1990 Butler to be far less easy going than the 2016 Butler (her introduction was new in the 2016 edition of Of Grammatology). Still, I know she’s an important thinker and I’m willing to slog if I must to get to the ideas.
