Looking for #lichen yesterday I noticed something red on some of them. At first I thought it could be paint spilled from painting trail blazes - but under the macro lens it looked like something living. Checking on #inaturalist I think I found Illosporiopsis christiansenii - German common name is "pink pillow fungus". It's a fungus feeding on lichen, a so called lichenicolous fungus - first time I found one of those. Looking for more information it seems little is known about them, most notably it's a species with an "unknown family".

I keep finding this in my firewood that was stacked last year. Is is a lichen? The wood is mostly wild cherry, birch, and maple, with a little alder. It’s often a little ball shape, I thought it might be egg cases but there’s nothing inside. There are mice making nests but these are out by themselves. #lichen #lichensubscibe #Mosstodon #Mousetodon
