Rather large sea worms are invading Whakaraupō.
Since 2020 Mediterranean fanworms up to half a metre long have spread through Lyttelton harbour. With no natural predator, the worms suffocate biodiversity. They've been detected at Corsair and Cass Bays. Eradication is the most desirable option.
The invasion has also sparked calls for better hull cleaning facilities and tighter regulations.

The outlet from Lyttelton Harbour to the sea just after sunset.
The Port Hills just South of Otautahi Christchurch are made up of 2 extinct volcanic cones, which used to stand offshore. Each has an outlet to the sea, pointing in different directions.

The Heathcote Railway Station in #Christchurch was served by #NZ’s 1st electrified suburban railway with frequent trains every day of day of the week to #Lyttelton & the city centre. The Lyttelton line was electrified in 1929, de-electrified in 1970 & urban passenger service ended in 1972 with boat train service to the Wellington steamer remaining until 1976.
