A problem with seeing the and the american decleration of independence as part of a natural progression towards more freedom is that these were not unique events, similar deals were made in other countries but didn't lead to glory

Interesting that the Emancipation Proclamation went through more than one draft.

More common than is sometimes realised.

One example is - where the later text issued on behalf of the young Henry III quite a few years after is regarded as the one in force - and has never been rescinded.

Another lesser known case is the . The original draft made no mention of other communities (than the Jewish) in . The final one did.

4/x and of the wonderful old in . The history around this tree alone is simply amazing - a copy of the was signed under it in 1215; a copy that perhaps was written by a group of nuns living nearby, on Runnymede island. There is a great chapter on this Yew in Zora del Buono's 'Das Leben der Maechtigen)

These otherwise unconnected events represent turning points in the world’s two most influential power centers, whose reach once exceeded 20 million sq. miles. But they overlap only in the 427 sq. miles of Hong Kong, now the Magna Carta's final battle ground.

📜 Magna Carta was signed in 1215.

👑 King John approved the Magna Carta during a political crisis. The document prevented him from exploiting his power, establishing that everybody – even the monarch – was subject to equality under the law ow.ly/LCaS50OIbMf

Anyone know who is behind in the UK - lots of their posts started appearing on a FB group I'm in. Feels all a bit dodgy far right type stuff.. they are doing stalls in towns to raise awareness of inalienable rights in but clearly some conspiracy theory stuff and feels a bit like US far right Christians money may be behind it. Asking people to join as supporters on patreon, online shop selling (overpriced) flags, charters, cards etc but they not on companies house and 'staff' look like stock photos. Is it a reincarnation of Reform or a Farage thing something worse.. ? commonlawassent.com/home-1

I'm reading a very interesting book about King John and the barons and how came into being, how it was ignored, re-written dozens of times and how it only really served to protect the barons' own interests, not that of the people...which has somehow been forgotten/ignored by those so fond of referring to it as some kind of 'people's charter'.
