YORK FACTORY EXPRESS #Blogpost
I have a good description of how the men who worked the York Boats "tracked" them up the #Saskatchewan River past an obstruction (one of many). As it happens, it is also a wonderful description of how the men used the poles. There are many other terms used exclusively in this river journey, and in the HBC's fur trade. Here are a few more of them. #CanadaHistory #WAHistory #HistoricJourney Home from Hudson Bay #MBHistory http://nancymargueriteanderson.com/tracking/

The Aurora Borealis was a familiar sight to the HBC men, but no York Factory Express man, other than Aemilus Simpson, wrote about seeing them. At the time he wrote this in his journal, the #Saskatchewan Brigades were somewhere between Cedar Lake and Cumberland House, #Manitoba #MBHistory #Books http://nancymargueriteanderson.com/aurora-borealis/ #History #AuroraBorealis #NorthernLights

In 1826, Aemilius Simpson writes the best description of this first stretch of the #Saskatchewan River west of Lake #Winnipeg. Stories from journals other than Simpson's appear here, too. Thomas Lowe was one of the best journal keepers, and he led out the York Factory Express in two occasions, in 1847, and 1848. More on the stretch of the Saskatchewan River as it leads the express men west to Cumberland House. #ThePas #MBHistory http://nancymargueriteanderson.com/thirteenth-leg/

YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: :Landmarks on the Echimamish River," #MB #MBHistory It is only by reading the journals of English explorers, who followed the paths the HBC men travelled, that you discover what these places were like. We begin here with "The Painted Stone Portage," which all of us who study #Canadian and #FurTrade #History understand is a major landmark on the old HBC route -- so here is Sir John Franklin's experience in 1819. #History http://nancymargueriteanderson.com/landmarks-on-the-echimamish-river/ Or follow my blog for more.

THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS:
The river route from Norway House to York Factory, on Hudson Bay, was packed with historic landmarks and points of interest.
Most HBC gentlemen, however, did not bother to keep records of the relatively relaxed downriver journey they made with contemporaries, especially as they had no responsibilities other than ensuring that they, themselves, had a quick and easy journey down to Hudson Bay....
