I found myself enjoying QUARTET (’81) far more than the masses, then or now, it seems. The 1920s Paris settings impeccably staged. You just wanted to walk right into the night clubs and restaurants. A big fan of Isabelle Adjani, who I thought (again a minority view it seems) was really good, particularly her third act meltdown. Maggie Smith was sensational. And yes, a couple flaws in the story telling, but otherwise this had me. #80sfilms #merchantivory
I think I have a new literary crush: Adam Berwick, the kind, introspective bachelor farmer in “The #JaneAusten Society,” the charming and, at times, deeply moving novel by Natalie Jenner.
Adam joins my other fictional crushes: #AlecScudder from #Maurice by #EMForster (he was played by Rupert Graves in the #MerchantIvory film version), Roderick Brooke from the Sybil Ingram novels by Amanda DeWees, and Simon Kincaide from the Badlands series of novels by Morgan Brice (Gail Martin).
