#Chakuna, the Dark Lord of #Valachan from #VanRichtensGuidetoRavenloft for #DnD5e, really captivates my imagination. Very little official imagery of her exists beyond a distant look at her in the book and her #IconsoftheRealm #mini, so I revamped her in #HeroForge with #Mesoamerican and #NativeAmerican inspirations.

I changed her from a Werepanther to a Werejaguar (using a Central/South American black #jaguar for a model) and was chiefly inspired by #AmberMidthunder's #Naru from #Prey (2022).

On the topic of #mixtec there is also a very interesting weapon design found in their codices. This is called the mixtec #sabre

#aztec Experts at #mexicolore were completely confused by this thing. This would be a red flag, but #mesoamerican history has always had a strong central #mexico in its coverage.

The answer comes in the paper "Mixtec Militarism" that can be found free on the internet.

For the last post, this is why one has to be very careful when talking about non-western #philosophy and #religion . There is a long #history of scholars saying people outside of #europe were not capable of philosophy and #rationality.

Portilla was the founder of modern #aztec #history but he faced backlash over his work that is now considered the foundation to the #mesoamerican field.

To be dismissive in #anthropology works is to continue this legacy.

This happy greenstone #frog lives at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC. Unfortunately very little info is available about its exact origins beyond it being pre-conquest #Mesoamerican; museum records list it as having been collected from the Valley of #Mexico, Chalco, possibly Veracruz, and added to the collection in 1901.

Dimensions: L13.5 x W 16.0 x D 25.0 cm.
