Breaking a bit of a silence - I ain’t dead! I have however been juggling a few projects, gaining a work promotion, getting older, going to a music festival for the first time in 23 years (Art Tan Gent in the Mendips) and getting a new camera. *phew *. The new camera made a local model air show even more fun this weekend but I can’t decide on a favourite photo…

Have started getting back into making models lately. It’s been 30-odd years since I last did one and a lot has changed in that time. I started with an Airfix Red Arrows Gnat as it’s not something that I would be overly disappointed to mess up, but I’m actually pretty pleased with how it turned out.

Productive day, converting a 50 litre plastic storage box into a model aircraft hangar.

Each model is supported on foamboard "trestles" so it doesn’t sit on its undercarriage, and is prevented from moving about to prevent damage during transport. I managed to get eight models fitted into two decks. There’s space for at least one more small model.

The latest model aircraft completed for the 1940 obsession. This year, I’m concentrating on RAF Bomber Command. An important British plane of World War Two was the Vickers Wellington. Over 11,000 were built up to 1945.

Built from the recent Airfix kit, which features a fully-detailed interior, my model represents a Wellington of No 311 (Czechoslovak) Squadron, flying from a base in Suffolk.

This past week, my 1940 hobby saw an Airfix Wellington masked for painting, an Airfix Stirling take a few faltering steps towards completion, and an AZ Model Tutor gets a few more finishing touches before I attempt to instal the rigging wires.

I really need to concentrate on my commission work. The 16 Great Eastern Railway coaches are progressing slowly, but I keep getting sidetracked by plastic aeroplane kits. I’ll perhaps go into more depth about that personal hobby project one day.

My 1940 Short Stirling project is coming together nicely. Upgrading a kit first made in the 1960s has been fun. I’m going to have to virtually scratch build nose and tail turrets, as I have done for the cockpit. Very pleased with how this build is going.

Over the past few weekends, I’ve been slowly putting together a 1/72nd scale aircraft kit. It’s a Handley Page Hampden, a medium bomber of the Royal Air Force in the early years of the Second World War. I’ve now got three model planes about ready for painting to begin, which means I must commit to setting up the air brush compressor and extractor system soon.

Turns out I wasn’t in the mood for work today. I rebuilt one of my model aircraft photo bases instead. It was in my head and I needed to get it out. Essentially, it’s a simple sheet of foamboard with "concrete" panels to represent an airfield parking area or apron in front of a hangar (that’s a separate project). Adequate for most photo sessions anyway.
