'Why ... come to ask for me ... and then say nothing? ... What is all this?' Raskolnikov's voice cracked, and his words seemed unwilling to emerge clearly.
This time the man raised his head and looked at him with sombre ominous eyes.
'Murderer!' he said suddenly, in a low but clear and distinct voice.
[...]
'But why do you ... what ... who is a murderer?' muttered Raskolnikov hardly audibly.
'You are,' pronounced the stranger still more distinctly and impressively, with a smile of triumphant hatred, and again he looked straight at Raskolnikov's pale face and his staring eyes.

The impending semester has already started stacking up the obligations; tasks appear seemingly out of nowhere even as blocks of time are claimed by others just as mysteriously.
I don't always want to find connections between my #MorningReading and my concerns of the moment, but it's nice when it happens naturally, unforced.
Back on campus, gearing up for Fall. Promising myself to be engaged here again on areas of interest and activity for me, esp. critical study of religion, religion and history, digital humanities, etc -- but also some non-work, more personal interests (are they separate?). Will see how long this lasts!
#MorningReading #TodaysPoem was Gerard Manley Hopkins' "To R.B" -- read it here: https://hopkinspoetry.com/poem/to-r-b/
I love the long arc he drew here, delight inspiring thought, thought transforming mind (and inspiring verse). Unrelated, but it reminded me of Richard Rodriguez once describing a certain type of essay as "the biography of an idea."
“The happiness or unhappiness of a man does not depend upon the amount of property or gold he owns. Happiness or misery is in one’s soul. A wise man feels at home in every country. The whole universe is the home of a noble soul.”

ecstatic love. Here on her knees,
in her seal skin buoyant boat,
her duties of her village complete,
she knows her place among the caribou

"Well then, did the Age of Genius ever occur? It is difficult to answer this question. Yes and no. There are things that cannot ever occur with any precision. They are too big and too magnificent to be contained in mere facts. They are merely trying to occur, they are checking whether the ground of reality can carry them. And they quickly withdraw, fearing to lose their integrity in the frailty of realization."

I need some good RSS feeds. Anyone wanna help me out? Trying to get enough going in my reader that it becomes my morning routine, like when my grandpa used to read the Wall Street Journal back in the day.

#MorningReading “Smart Kids Eventually Grow Up” by Valerie Valdes. http://candleinsunshine.com/musings/smart-kids-eventually-grow-up/
A bit about how we became reliant on praise as children which eventually sabotaged us. I’m not sure I’m 100% with this but I think there is good to be found here.
