The Blackening fails to live up to the promise of the trailer, delivering a decidedly average horror comedy that is light on both horror and comedy.

The likeable cast isn't enough to elevate a script this predictable and lacking in the basic requirements on the genres it sits within. If you're not going to deliver those elements, I'd at least appreciate a few buckets of gore, but we don't even get that.

A ★★★½ review of The Whale (2022)

THE WHALE

A24's other prestige Oscar magnet has awards acting in nearly every scene. Most of it connects, when it doesn't it feels like A Serious Afterschool Special about accepting others or whatever.
Waited on this after awards season just to see it fresher without the hyperbole.
Darren Aronofsky at an 11 for most of its runtime. Subtlety goes out the rainy window.
Compelling for most if its runtime, despite the single location. Every music cue tells you exactly how to feel.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem is a total blast. Smartly written, gorgeous art style, killer soundtrack. It sits neatly alongside the Spiderverse films and is every bit as good.

Interesting to see , one of the major cinema chains in the UK, setting up to fail in its opening week, with only a single screening per-day in a standard 2D format without premium pricing. That's not going to help ticket sales, or . Cineworld desperately gambling that they'll make more money this way.

JOJO RABBIT

Taika Waititi is winning as Hitler, but the itself whipsaws with too many shifts in tone to take anything seriously.
EG- I never cared what happened to ScarJo's character because it was intercut with too many scenes of Rebel Wilson being Chris Tucker in the Fifth Element (annoying without actually being funny).

HEIST

As a there's not much you haven't seen before, but David Mamet's hard boiled dialogue keeps things relatively fresh.
One of Gene Hackman's better late career performances.
Danny DeVito is 7 feet tall and Sam Rockwell is appropriately squirrelly.

ASTEROID CITY

Such a befuddling experience...

An explosion of Wes Anderson tropes with a sprawling cast of characters that say their lines exactly the same way.
None of these characters resemble actual human beings in any way, just characters you’d see in a Wes Anderson movie, um,
Style over anything resembling substance. 100 minutes of looking at a beautifully rendered painting of plastic fruit.
On the plus side, Asteroid City has more minorities onscreen than his previous 10 films combined. Yay.

INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY

Wistful to see Harrison Ford whip the whip and be the only person in existence to wear a Fedora and not come across as a douche.
Efficiently directed by James Mangold and the plot isn't that much better or worse than Temple of Doom or Last Crusade, but after sitting through 2 and a half hours...it's rarely fun. Feels like it's going through the motions for most of its runtime.
Not sure if having Spielberg at the helm would have made much of a difference (SEE: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) so I can't fault James Mangold for simply being workmanlike.
Trades on nostalgia for the most part, but we don't mind. Until we do.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge works better with Ford than Kate Capshaw or Shia LeBeouf ever did, so there's that.
Thomas Kretschmann required to play a Nazi every couple of years. Like Doctor Strange, DOD wastes a perfectly good Mads Mikkelsen to play a generic bad guy.
You're either excited to see this or still stinging from Crystal Skull. Lowered expectations would help either way. The whip needs help getting up.

A sometimes painfully inert action comedy wastes the chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges. The actors clearly look like they're having fun.
Too bad the audience isn't.
You look at your phone checking how long you've been waiting for the to get better.

Loved Hereditary and .
Liked most of this a lot.
Ari Aster's 3 hour endurance test has one of Joaquin Phoenix's best performances playing such a passive character. Everything happens to Beau and he just takes it.
Loses steam in the final hour as the revelations come, but they don't have the forward momentum and surreal humor of the first two.
Well acted on all front as every cast member (Zoe Lister Jones gets a Pearl-ish monologue) is dialed up to 12.

Emotional without being too mawkish. Helen Hunt's best performance. I thought it would feel like an after-school special and there are times it does (a sexually explicit afterschool special), but those syrupy parts go down smoother than usual.

ME AND ORSON WELLES

Genial theaters BTS movie for, oddly enough, Zac Efron fans and Orson Welles fans.
Post High School Musical Efron gets to show a little range Claire Danes gets to show a little Daines.
Christian McKay makes wonderful Orson Welles though I would have liked to have seen the 20 minute scene where he eats an entire buffet without taking a breath. Richard Linklater cut it simply for time.
An unremarkable diversion, but if you like watching people look at people rehearse...

I knew nothing about Harvey Pekar when I saw this and now I know way more about a middle aged white guy that I ever thought I would.
So much information packed into every frame.
May be even more rewarding a second time, but you would have to wait a year later to see Paul Giamatti topless in Sideways.
