It's hard to beat a photo that has both paintbrush and a stratovolcano in it. I think the plant species is scarlet paintbrush (Castilleja miniata).

43 years ago today, Mt St. Helens erupted, decimating the region with the force of around 35 megatons of TNT (Little Boy dropped on Hiroshima was 15 kilotons for comparison)
I got lucky one day in 2021 when the weather was picture-perfect ~ it's frequently not so hit the visitor's center before you take the rather long drive up to the observatory.

My wife (also a geologist) and I visited Mt St Helens National Volcanic Monument on our honeymoon camping trip.

Today is the 43rd anniversary of the #MountSaintHelens eruption on May 17, 1980.
This eruption was both geologically fascinating and also monumentally deadly, killing 57 people.
I wanted to share one of my favorite sets of photos from the eruption, which really conveys the stunning reality of what had just happened.
