Zanthus has been invited to a house in southeastern Selenia and asked to come equipped for a swim, because there's a pool. He's old enough to be trusted alone in places like this, but what he finds out when he gets there is that he isn't alone. Emerald Flame isn't sure whose house this is, either; he was invited there same as Zan. The phrase "a reflection of flame from a pool of water" is weighing on his mind, though.

Zanthus is fun to draw and makes a good target for interesting poses. His body is flexible enough that he can go completely straight or even curl up forward (which is a cozy way to sleep). I might follow him around later to see what parts of Selenia he's gotten to and who he's run into so far; there might be some familiar faces there.

Zanthus Bradley Banthus - named after his yellow ("xanthous") color and his approximate species ("banths" are multi-limbed lions from the Burroughs Mars novels) - is a student at Selenia Central High School. He's a big fan of fantasy and science fiction, which is weird considering he can step out his front door and experience stranger things than any author he's read ever wrote about.
Work has been very busy, so I think I might keep doing lighter sketches like this for a bit.

More sketches of the character from last night, now with color. I'm starting to get a better feel for who he is — 15 or so years old and another resident of Selenia, at least. There's more to him than this, but for now I'm trying to play it mostly by intuition and not let anything be forced.

Just a line-art sketch tonight; I've been working on the Fixl engine more but didn't get it in shape to show off tonight, so here's this kid instead. This shape is a new one on him, and he likes it enough to keep, but it's enough of a change from what he used to be that he wants a new name to go with it, and that might be a while.

These two go way back. They were all friends once, long ago, at the start of the project. There were five of them all together, but the real philosophical rift was between Væri and Blit. The others were forced to take sides, but by then they'd all been trapped inside the System they'd been building and the conflict was unavoidable. It nearly caused the System to collapse into oblivion. Nearly.

Xolph is an avid swimmer; he doesn't have any kind of aquatic adaptations, although his extra arms do help him maneuver underwater. Selenia doesn't have any coastline, but there are lakes and swimming pools all throughout, so he's never far from a swim when he's in the mood for one.

Xolph is a relative of Vesta, a teenaged cousin (of neither sex) whose homeworld is a kind of parallel 1990s Los Angeles. Their name is an anagram of "phlox", a flower with a similar color to their skin, and they're a deeply geeky person, fond of 16-bit video games, RPGs, and weird TMBG-esque music. You could call Xolph an "alien" and they'd agree it feels right, even if they're not actually from somewhere in outer space. They're just a cheerful weirdo.

Some designs for a generalized Vesta-based person. I think the androgyny comes across pretty well here, and I like the expressiveness of their face (even if it took a few tries to get the shapes consistent). This is only CW'ed because they're technically naked, but what you see is what you get there. No sexual attributes at all, just a six-armed and mostly hairless humanoid whatsit.

Væri is her name, and you could call her Blit's counterpart in some ways. She's the same kind of thing he is, a semi-holographic digital life form, and the two of them (plus a handful of others) have a shared past. They're probably the only ones of their kind, and they haven't seen one another in a very long time. Their story will eventually be told, but for now I just thought I'd try redesigning her with this new focus in mind.
