Very cool, the Klezmer Institute got another grand from the US National Endowment for the Humanities to allow them to continue working into the next phase of their Klezmer Archive project.

I saw demos of this proposed archive last year, it will be quite like anything else. Essentially a kind of repository of user-contributed knowledge and documents about musical pieces, with branching connections between people and music.

The scene has never been extremely focused on scores, preferring to learn by ear, so these copyright scores haven't attracted a lot of interest. In theory they were all intended to be filed away in advance of a recording session, but some sessions were canceled or never happened, so unheard compositions are still sitting in the LOC. A few of them are digitized but many aren't, and so I have been working with someone local to DC to try and locate and scan more.

I'm hoping somebody can advise me, or point me in the direction of advice. Apologies in advance that this post is a bit long, all-over-the-place, and hashtag-heavy. I really don't know what I'm doing. 😂

What I'm trying to do is make MIDI renditions of music that sound pretty good. For myself as a composer, and for stimuli in music cognition research.

My first problem: I need to commit to a DAW and learn how to use it well. I used Logic in my undergrad, but I do not have a Mac and no longer have access to it. I have Mixbus from a music recording class, but it doesn't seem ideal for MIDI-based projects. I have MuseScore 4, but I haven't learned what it can (and can't) do yet.

My second problem: I want to use high-quality sample libraries, but I do not know how to get started.

I like open source, but I am not at all opposed to paying for software and sample libraries. Or buying new hardware. I just don't want to pay for things that aren't going to be useful for me (I also prefer one-time fees to ongoing subscriptions). Windows or Linux.

Working on an "Exposition" (that's what they're called, rather than paper/article) for the Journal of Artistic Research about the process of exploration of aesthetic as research in my latest project, "Αγάπη (Agapi) and other kinds of love". It's a great way to work. Very slow - but I think that's good - less likely to be accused of not being "proper" research. And I just had a "traditional" paper accepted by a Q1 journal last night, so I'm feeling like I can really do BOTH kinds of research now :) Here's the latest JAR, if you're interested: jar-online.net/en/issues/27

Earlier this fall we had a fantastic chat with @arjensenius about art, science, privacy and copyright issues in open music research as a part of yet another seminar with the Norwegian node 🇳🇴 of @riotscienceclub 🎶🎸📈

The talk is now online and openly available, happy viewing! youtu.be/LShsb50xxsg
