I'm not one for singer-songwriter style music, usually. But the hypnotic songs, and the artist's truly exceptional understanding of musical grammar creates something that sounds subdued, but is more stealthy than that.

#NewReleases This Week: #Mynolia – #AllThingsHeavy. This Berlin-based Kiwi-Canuck lets a humbucker guitar and sparse drums anchor songs that pull you down dark roads into places you may regret visiting but are compelled to travel. The title track went on my pop playlist and “An Old Disguise” went on folk. The blurbs say Mynolia is like Feist, but I’m reminded of earlier alt-folk – say, Margo Timmins fronting Mazzy Star.
