If you haven't logged in to the National Library (catalogue or eResources) in the last couple of weeks, it's worth checking to see if you still can.
I was just told my existing library card didn't make it across to the new catalogue system, despite being a relatively regular user. So I needed to apply for a new card via nla.gov.au/getting-started/you.
Heading in soon to pick up the new card.

@wragge Thanks very much Tim. That’s new to me about using /image in place of /view and I can certainly use that to advantage. Also NLA pictures is an area where NLA “objects” and Trove “objects” are one and the same.

Helpful for .

The National Library of Australia further reduces accessibility with its new catalogue system. "Request this item" doesn't work in Windows XP. This follows on from Trove search failing under XP from April last year. Other institutions can release new catalogue systems without cutting off their XP users. (Issue reported to NLA.)

@wragge It’s quite a bumpy graph and yet your trend observations in alt-text look spot on. The largest %age drop looks to be immediately after June 2020 “new Trove”. It really is poor accountability that NLA doesn’t publish its own performance analyses (especially time series). Their absence makes your many analyses even more important.

Nostalgia is all over social media and it’s the bread and butter of Australian cultural institutions like NLA, Trove, NAA and a lesser extent NMA. ABCTV has its fair share too. It presumably sells. Not being nostalgic myself I’ve wondered about this.

So, a thoughtful ABC News opinion piece by Stan Grant on the danger of nostalgia: abc.net.au/news/2023-04-16/cou
(I’ve reserved the cited book at the library.)

I guess there’s a sliding scale of danger/risk. A shift from now to then, action to inaction.

In comparing the campaigns of 2022-23 and original 2016, I consider a question of ethics. Does it matter whether the public is well informed?

Yet another article on Trove relying on anecdote to tug on your heart-strings and avoiding accountability for poor performance revealed by the numbers. ( Times today p.10)

Trove’s 50% decline in sessions over 2 reporting years was brushed off by NLA’s DG as just one stat. But it’s the one they publish in their annual report and they have ignored request for other performance figures.

Blaming Google is a cop out. The decline coincides with Trove2020 release which, presumably unintentionally, blocked access by the Internet Archive to Trove lists.

The usage decline continued in April last year when users with older devices lost access to Trove.

For years the National Library has held the public over a barrel.

[We might have to limit or cut access to your valued resource unless we get more money. But we won’t be transparent about our stewardship and performance.]

A government agency, special like no other, applying pressure on the easily led public in preference to making its case in budget cycle.

Still looking at NLA-Trove funding numbers …

NLA injected with $16.4 million from Public Service Modernisation Fund over 4 years to 2020.

To “invest further in its digital infrastructure, recommence digitising its collections, resume adding … library, research, museum and archive collections to Trove and enhance access to its own collections … [and support] longer lead times and more gradual transition to new business models, which require Commonwealth, state and local agencies to invest in the Trove infrastructure they use to enhance access to their own collections.

“[NLA] Council is mindful that this funding is both FINITE and for SPECIFIC purposes ... Council’s focus is on maximising the business benefits of the funding while simultaneously planning to maintain the Library’s CAPABILITY when the FUNDING CONCLUDES.”

The April release of Trove resulted in users with some older devices being unable to access Trove. “Trove is unable to load. Refresh to try again or check your browser version.” (screenshot)

In correspondence with Trove support it was clear it was unintended, unnoticed, unbelieved and untroubled. I don’t expect it to be fixed. Accessibility reduced.

National Cultural Policy: "The Government will continue to support our National Collecting Institutions to provide broad public access to their collections, including support for digitisation."

WHO FUNDS TROVE?
I checked the numbers. You may be surprised at what I did & didn't find.

1. gov.au budgets lump sum for National Library (NLA) - no mention of Trove.
2. NLA reports Trove Collaborative Services (TCS) income from partners such as State Libraries; stated goal "full cost-recovery program over time." i.e., NLA intends to fully fund Trove.
3. NLA doesn't report Trove spend, e.g. whether improving platform for all or digitising own material.
Q. Who funds Trove? A: NLA (from its budget and charges on its partners).

So, question the library and history industries' emotive and misleading campaign and NLA's silence.

NLA introduced Trove Collaborative Services (TCS) 4 years ago as "cost recovery". Since its introduction it's brought an average of $3.8 million extra (above government) funding for Trove. Here are its contributions to annual income, alongside government funding and other sources.

"The Trove Collaborative Services (TCS) funding model provides own-source revenue, and the Library aims to transition to a full cost-recovery program over time."
