#Nokalakevi was first identified as the remains of #Archaeopololis in the 1830s, when it was also thought to be the remains of #Aea, the mythical capital of Colchis. The first excavation in 1930/31 was an extraordinary collaboration between the Georgian SSR's People’s Commissariat for Education (#Narkompros) and the Emergency Association of German Science (Der #Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft). Large scale excavations began in 1973, led by the #Janashia State History Museum #Tbilisi 🧵

Hello Mastodon!
We'd like to introduce our #archaeological project and the site to you. The name #Nokalakevi means "ruins where a town was", but it is also known as #Tsikhegoji (the fortress of #Kuji) or ‘the triple-walled fortress’ in #medieval #Georgian chronicles. To early #Byzantine historical sources it was known as #Archaeopolis and was successfully defended against a Persian attack in the mid 6th century AD 🧵

The news from #Kherson is wonderful. In 2019 I was fortunate enough to work with #Ukrainian and #Georgian veterans at #Nokalakevi, using #archaeology and #heritage as a #therapeutic tool. Writing up this work, alongside results from #UK #veterans, gave us a chance to answer the call for support from the Ukrainian journal #Arheologia too. These are small contributions but I’m so proud of this work

As a new arrival (today!) I should introduce myself. I have been involved in #archaeology in one way or another (volunteer, undergrad, cheerleader, postgrad, commercial digger, and academic) since I was 16. Since 2002 I’ve worked in #Nokalakevi, #Georgia, co-directing an excavation with colleagues based in #Tbilisi; my PhD (#InvisibleDiggers) was a study of #UK commercial archaeology; and since 2015 I’ve been involved in research on the mental health/ wellbeing benefits of archaeology #AMPHORA
