The first of Will Oldham’s various enigmas, Palace combined the slowcore drone of bands like Slint (most of whose members turn up here) with the skeletal twang of Appalachian folk at its rawest. “Idle Hands Are the Devil’s Playthings” and “Riding” shiver with moral fear too stark to be ironic.
