AAAS: "Did our ancient relatives practice cannibalism?" About 1.5 million yrs ago, an ancient evolutionary ancestor may have feasted on tissue at least from another Hominidae [modern humans and our close extinct relatives, such as Ardipithecus and Australopithecus], if not a member of their own species. "On the fossil of a shin bone housed at the Nairobi National Museum, researchers have discovered nine previously unidentified incisions made by a stone tool." These cuts were clustered around where the calf muscle [deep muscle = soleus, more superficial muscles = gastrocnemius, skinny muscle in back of calf = plantaris] would be attached, in this case almost certainly the soleus. "This may be the oldest example of butchery, and possibly cannibalism, among our evolutionary relatives, according to a study published today in Scientific Reports." Little too old for an episode of CSI. Also clearly not vegetarians.

Anyone into esp. able to help me find the name of the scientist who in the 80s presented her theory that humans were in S.America (Columbia?) long before & must have come to some 20-30k prior? The article made it clear the archaeology community laughed her off. I read this as a teen before home internet, must've been a mag like Nature or Reader's Digest. I want to find her name & see if she ever got credit! Been bugging me off and on for years.
