9 December 1917: Ottomans forces surrender #Jerusalem to the British.

It was a welcome development for the Entente in the wake of the disasters of #Passchendaele & #Caporetto. In June, Prime Minister Lloyd George had asked General Allenby to "to take Jerusalem as a Christmas present for the nation.

However, it was in Flanders where Bertie’s story nearly ended. After being hit in the face by shrapnel or machine gun fire, he was left for dead in the horror and muddy confusion of the battle of #Passchendaele in 1917.

But it wasn't his time yet. A priest who was walking among the dead noticed that Bertie was still breathing. He then began his last battle of the war: the battle for his health and recovery.
