Happy #PhyllocaridFriday !
Today's phyllocarid is Oryctocaris balssi (Broili, 1930). The picture is from a paper by Bergmann & Rust (2014). This crustacean is from the Devonian Hunsrück Slate in Germany. At this site, fossils were replaced with the mineral pyrite before they could significantly decay--preserving detail unusual for fossils. Presumably, this O. balssi is related to modern Leptostracans--but it is much larger and more heavily armored. #arthropoda #crustacea #paleontology #fossil

For #Crustmas and #PhyllocaridFriday I give you a nice specimen of Ceratiocaris from the Yale Peabody Museum Invertebrate Paleontology Collections. #palaeontology #paleontology #crustacea #fossil #arthropod #yale
