Pretas, “hungry ghosts,” are one of Buddhism’s great insights—beings tormented by insatiable desires who never can consume enough to ease the suffering their hungers elicit. To Buddhists, they’re one of the six realms of samsara (cyclic existence) from which they hope to be liberated. Trapped in samsara, we see its realms as real but they’re only subjective experiences created by our minds. The preta realm is defined by neurotic attachment and its futility.
