The second concert is the famous aftershow from December 24 (in the early morning), 1998 in the old Tivoli (a small indy concert venue that's now gone 😢) and it's a bootleg.

There were a few things special about this concert:

1. #LennyKravitz played drums during the first few instrumentals.

2. Candy Dulfer, ánd her father Hans Dulfer were on stage.

3. I was never so psychically close to Prince (and Lenny), because they walked by just 1 meter (!) away from me (from the VIP space to backstage).

4. Prince played as an encore a jam having the words "I’ve gotta go home y'all... I’ve gotta go back to America. I’ve gotta go get ready for the bomb. Osama bin Laden gettin’ ready to bomb. America... you better watch out... 2001." #Utrecht is a middle sized medieval city in the middle of the Netherlands and capital of the eponymous province. #Prince played here six times. 4x in 1987 and 2x in 1998 (incl 1 aftershow). Welcome on #PrinceFriday, live from Utrecht!

There are two concerts I share with you today. The first one is officially released and was part of the Sign '☮️' the Times Super Deluxe box-set (this one again, yes! best box-set ever!). You find the concert as CD 7 and 8, or LP 11, 13 and 13, or track 75-92. It's from June 17, 1987 in Stadion De Galgenwaard. I was personally there at the 19th and 21st. Those were my first two Prince concerts and yes I was very young. 👶

This infectious song, that sounds like it walked out of a #musical, can be found on one of the vault discs from the Sign "☮️" The Times Super Deluxe box-set.

According to http://www.princevault.com/index.php?title=Wally:

"… After finishing the song, Prince ordered engineer Susan Rogers to erase all channels on the 24-stem recording, against her pleas not to. A new version for which Eric Leeds and Atlanta Bliss added horns, was then recorded two days afterwards.

The original version was a solo recording dealing with Prince’s break-up with Susannah Melvoin, and thanking Wally Safford for being his friend. Allegedly he felt the song was too personal, however, and kept adding layers of percussion and changing the feel of the track. …"

So this here is the second version and it looks like the original version is indeed gone. According to Susan Rogers (https://soundcloud.com/cateto-catetez/susan-rogers-on-wally) the melody of the original version sounded similar to the released (second) version, but we will never know how it sounded (or Rogers should secretly have made a copy, but that is imo after all this years very unlikely). Anyhow, I think it's epic!

#PrinceFriday today is about #bootlegs! #Prince was one of the most bootlegged artists ever. The most famous of them was The Black Album. An unreleased album, that followed the Sign '☮️' The Times double album. The plan was to release it in December 1987, but Prince cancelled the release and gave the order to destroy all copies. But some of those were already distributed, so in a few months it became probably the most bootlegged album ever (well you never know exactly).

There is a lot to say about the album, the reason for cancellation, the fact he still played songs from it on the 1988 LoveSexy Tour, that it had a (limited) release in 1994 after all and that it's the only officially released Prince album not on streaming platforms.

Fortunately there are enough places where the album can be found, incl. YouTube (for your convenience).

This week we are going back to the #Montreux #Jazz Festival on 18 July 2009. #Prince and the NPG played two shows that night and both are equally legendary! There were plans during Prince' lifetime to release this on DVD, but as happened many times during his career, it was shelved for unknown reasons (probably he lost interest 🤷‍♀️). The Prince Estate can release it, but it seems the Estate is only busy cashing on re-releases. 🙄 Fortunately we have these great video's on YouTube (who will probably taken down when the estate nevertheless decides to release it). So please enjoy these two legendary concerts!

Originally meant for the album and film *Purple Rain*. It was replaced by The Beautiful Ones (what is also a great track of course), although it would be better if The Beautiful Ones had replaced *Take Me With U* (IMO of course 😉).

The best version is IMO the live version from the same concert that produced the song Purple Rain! Essential for everyone who wants to know #Prince! Goosebumps everytime I see and hear this! 💜 Even after all those years! 😢

Welcome 2 the Crystal Ball! 🔮 Welcome 2 #PrinceFriday! :prn:

Because it's almost 2023, I thought; let's to a futuristic theme. Of course I could pick the 1989 track The Future, but Crystal Ball is by far superior.

The more than 10 minute opus Crystal Ball would first be released on the cancelled #Prince & The Revolution album *Dream Factory*. There are circulating two (unreleased) versions from that time; the full 11m34s version [1] and an 'edited' version of 9m31s [2]. Recorded in April 1986.

After the break up of The Revolution Prince started to compile a triple album under the name Crystal Ball. The now title track was mixed again, re-edited to 10m28s and overdubbed in August 1986 with Clare Fischer’s orchestra [1]. Because the triple album became a double album, the track had to go and the album was re-named to the 1987 *Sign '☮️' The Times*.

It became a heavily bootlegged song and eventually it was released on the 1996 triple compilation album (with previously unreleased music) *Crystal Ball*. Note however that this album has nothing to do with the original triple album.

Today on #PrinceFriday, I'm going into #religion. To be precise; #Prince and religion.

I'm not religious at all. Still religion and spirituality created one of Prince' greatest songs and even albums. Yes, he went to far on some occasions. I can remember him yelling in concerts in the #Netherlands; 'Do you believe Holland?!'. Reaction of the audience in majority; 'NO!'. Read the room Prince! 😉

Anyway, because it's almost #Christmas I'm going to share 5 of IMO the greatest religious and/or spiritual Prince songs. Forget the album version. This more than twelve minutes of psychedelic funkrock is one of #Prince' best piece of music that he ever recorded! With special mention of Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman. Listen it with head phones or super loud without (don't disturb your neighbours).
