@MobileMaggie @RMTownsend So much of in history is just narrating history to public audiences. have done a little more with . uses to a limited extent. But I think there's still a lot of fear that the public doesn't have the background knowledge to interpret history in a way that meets all our ethical standards, and our role as historians is to be something like interpretive authorities for the public.

The and seem to be ahead of the , in terms of finding ways to involve the public in meaningful ways. Since humanities scholarship tends to be interpretive, it's a little harder to think of as a spectrum, or to involve the public in the interpretive process.

I'm thinking about various models of that are often framed as democratizing knowledge, but they seem very top-down to me. Scholarly discourse works because we have access to one anothers' sources and can vet interpretive claims about what the sources mean. Scholarship merely directed at the public asks the audience to accept or reject the claims being made without access to the sources. Are different models possible? Can tools change the game?
