When #replying in a #thread, if your #posts/#toots are set to "public" by default, then your replies will appear in people's timelines. If you just want to reply to the thread without broadcasting your reply, change the post's #privacy from public to #unlisted

In #webUI when #replying to a toot the #textbox gives too small of a space to type, compared to when typing a new toot. The textbox lacks the resize-widget so that I cannot stretch it to suit.

The #kludge I, then, use is to increase the zoom ratio by 10% (#Firefox/Windows 10; 13", 1920x1080 px screen). Besides increasing the font size a tiny bit, the layout changes from 3-column to 2-column & rewarded by decently sized text box to reply.
