Flickering shadows moved in the treetops. Now that the humans had gone, monkeys dropped boldly onto the grounds, scavenging beneath the tables for scraps. A band of warthogs ambled in, a mated pair with a cluster of tiny piglets. They snuffled in the grass. A stately nyala stepped out of the brush to nibble the buds of the trees, until the raucous squeal of baboons split the silence.

I ran around the car and wrenched open the door, half afraid it would come off in my hand. We zoomed through the narrow streets, scattering cyclists and mopeds. My tiny driver could scarcely see over the steering wheel, and the windshield was a maze of cracks. There was no seatbelt, and I dug my fingers into the holes in the upholstery to hold on.
