Een dierentuin in de Verenigde Staten heeft donderdag de geboorte van drie kleine stralenschildpadjes aangekondigd. Dat is bijzonder, omdat de vader al 90 jaar is. En het is de eerste keer dat hij vader wordt.

Schildpad Jonathan zag tijdens zijn ca. 190-jarige leven op het eiland Sint-Helena in het zuiden van de Atlantische Oceaan al 35 gouverneurs de revue passeren. Geef toe, dat stemt toch tot nederigheid.

Jonathan (hatched c. 1832) is a Seychelles giant #tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea hololissa), a subspecies of the Aldabra giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea); he is the #oldest known living land #animal.
Jonathan resides on the island of Saint Helena, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.
