The article I wrote today for Asian Month is closely related to my previous article. This magazine, Tjerita Roman, was another Malay-language literary monthly founded in Surabaya in 1929. It was part of the golden age of Peranakan Chinese literary output in the late colonial Dutch East Indies.

@m_rhett One I came across in my research years ago is this historical political cartoon from 1919 from a Dutch East Indies communist newspaper called Islam Bergerak (Islam in motion) from Surakarta, Java. Political cartoons were quite rare in the Malay radical press at that time and I think this one earned the editor a prison term from the Dutch authorities. The text right under translates to "BEWARE! Once my nail, now my anchor! Once my master, now clearly my enemy!"

My latest bio for Wikipedia Asian Month, Mahjoeddin Datoek Soetan Maharadja (c.1860-1921) considered one of the fathers of Indonesian journalism but also complicated figure whose rigid views made him many enemies.

He came from an aristocratic Minangkabau family who were very loyal to the Dutch and worked as a government prosecutor before entering journalism. He fell out of step with both Indonesian National Awakening and Islamic modernism in 1910s.
