A paper on the smooth-coated otters in Singapore, looking at their current distribution and some causes of mortality.

"Vehicle collisions are the main cause of mortality and are frequent at dams separating freshwater and coastal habitats. While there is a clear increase in smooth-coated otter numbers since 2017, there remain multiple natural and human-caused threats to otter persistence."

Sad News: One of Singapore’s famous oldest known smooth coated otter in Singapore - she lived to a ripe age of 11-12 years old.

Bishan mum was a local and international celebrity. She and her family are the most filmed smooth-coated otters in Singapore by many global media organisations in the past few years - she made appearances in NatGeo, BBC, NHK, CNA productions & etc, just to name a few.

R.I.P. 🌈

Singapore Otters

The smooth-coated otter Lutrogale perspicillata is one of 13 extant species of otter (Sub-family: Lutrinae) in the world. Distributed throughout South Asia and Southeast Asia, its range is continuous from Indonesia up to Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, southern China and India, with an isolated population in Iraq.
