#Linguists #Sociolinguists #Anthropologists please read this if you haven't before:
Hill, Jane. 2014. Looking Looking back, looking ahead. Annual Review of Anthropology. 43. 1-14.
It is a beautiful narrative of one (important) view of the history of our fields. And it's Jane Hill - if you had the good luck to know her, it's like getting to listen to her talk to us one more time.

Inspired by a lawyer friend posting something similar: is there a community of Mastodon users who are #sociolinguists (or otherwise use #sociolinguistics in their work)? I never really talked about my work over on the birdsite but I might want to here.
I'm a prof at the University of Alberta (currently in my 26th year, oof). I was trained as a variationist back in the day but these days am interested mostly in language and identity and language ideologies, and use primarily qualitative methods.

...the residents of Fussala were actually saying among themselves, as opposed to the Latin they used when dealing with Roman officials (religious or secular). So we may be looking at a situation in which those who are in power are worried that those who are not in power may be hiding information by conversing in a language those in power do not understand.
I would be interested to hear from #sociolinguists and #historians of similar situations in other historical periods and regions. Thanks!
