Just back (in Punta Arenas) from a week off the radar in ... Thus absent from all social media!

We caught the ferry across the Magellan Strait and hitchhiked down to Ushuaia. Four days hiking in Tierra del Fuego national park, climbing peaks such as Cerro Guanaco, camping by rivers and forests; then a breezy 3 day journey back north through grassland and plains. An amazing adventure!

The Sarcophagi of Karajía held the bones of Chachapoya chiefs or warriors, and would have been a place for their people to venerate their ancestors. Andean cultures tended to believe that the dead were still sentient in the afterlife, where their spirits would still live on here. There were once a lot more of these throughout the region, but most have since been destroyed by looters.

Huaca Rajada & the Tombs of Sipán are often regarded as Peru’s archeological equivalent of Egypt’s King Tut’s tomb. It contains fourteen separate tombs of the Moche elite, dating from around 50-300 AD. It’s the most complete funerary site that has ever been discovered from any pre-Columbian Andean culture.

Drone flight over Fortress Paramonga. It was built by the Chimú empire to defend their south frontier against enemies. Their rapid southern expansion may have been encouraged by the growing power of the Inca empire to their southeast, in preparation for a future conflict. But the Chimú were no match for the Inca. They were defeated during the rule of the Inca King Pachacuti.
