With #SpaceKaren showing his absolute ineptitude almost hourly now, who wants to volunteer to hop on his rocket for a three-month ride to Mars? I’m sure that will go splendidly.

Therefore, the "silly X" move has a purpose, I have no idea of what it is, but it's happening for a reason.

Might work or not, I can't say, but I can say that labelling it as further evidence that #SpaceKaren is a fool and/or that he's destroying that other app on purpose is wrong.

In return, he receives a kind of global influence that money COULD NOT buy in other ways.
A kind of influence that has global reach, and is inaccessible to all other human beings, includng those with more money than him (if any).

#SpaceKaren is using that other app to buy himself MORE global influence, and in a way that is accessible to him and whoever shares his worldview, but is accessible ONLY to such people.

It has a cost, but think about it: nobody else CAN buy themselves such influence. Therefore, it's priceless.

The overwhelming majority of blue ticks are sympathetic towards #SpaceKaren, and thus produce a *constant* stream of evidence that HIS VIEWS are supported by large numbers of people.

This evidence gets picked up and noticed by each one of us, each time we look at the replies to any popular tweet.

So, this policy amplifies SpaceKaren's inflence in the public sphere, and lets paying customers do it for him. On the GLOBAL scale.
