These results fit well with our own work in Calabria et al. (2022), indicating that a PEP1-PEPR2-BIK1-RBOHD pathway is involved in the defense against F. oxysporum by showing highly localized transcriptional upregulation of these components at the colonization site. #SpatialImmunity
My final seminar with the #UniMelbourne colours and design. It was fun to speak at the #CambridgeUniversity #Endosymbiosis Seminar. Thank you very much for the invitation Sebastian Schornack, and thanks to everyone who attended and joined the discussion - I enjoyed it at lot. 🙂

I know we normally don't put blurbs on papers, as they have on the back of books... But Jeff Dangl called our #SpatialImmunity #preprint "really good and important", and I will definitely put this on the cover of the next version! 🙂🙏 I can certainly draw a lot of motivation from this! 😊

Of course, this model is speculative, since we are relying on observational data only at this point. Yet, I believe that this work provides a nice example of our #SpatialImmunity approach, and may show how this approach can complement the existing data and methods.
And here is our #preprint number 2:

"Spatially distinct #phytohormone responses of individual Arabidopsis thaliana root cells to infection and colonization by #Fusarium oxysporum"
Continuing our #SpatialImmunity theme. See this thread for a #PaperSummary:
In this preprint we investigate the local responsiveness of phytohormone (#JasmonicAcid (JA) #SalicylicAcid (SA) #Ethylene (ET)) biosynthesis & signaling markers to infection & colonization.

Below you see the local activation of BIK1 (A,B,🟡) & RBOHD (C-D,🟡) expression in a distinct group of cells immediately bordering the colonization front of the fungus (🟣) that is growing upward from the root tip through the vasculature. #SpatialImmunity
In the future we want to further map the local immune responses of different pathways of the plant immune system to infection & colonization by microbes, and also compare the responses between pathogenic & beneficial microbes (MAMP vs. PAMP).
Between 2020-22, Melbourne went through 6 harsh lockdowns, during which we were not allowed to work, while in between these lockdowns we were only allowed to work for few days and hours, and hardly ever more than 2 days in a row. So we had to adjust our work.
We noticed that plant immune responses are hardly ever recorded live & with spatial resolution - meaning the responses of individual cells in intact tissues and plants. #SpatialImmunity.
