Bagelverse 1:

The Earth is roughly spherical, which makes drawing maps of it difficult. Thanks to the non-zero Gaussian curvature (local and total), you have to compromise between preserving shapes, distances, and angles, and directions.

The surface of a torus, on the other hand, can be mapped directly to a rectangle, as demonstrated by Pac-Man. So why not have a bagel shaped planet? The cartography is simpler, and it leads to many bizarre consequences.
