This week, I wrote about Kubrick's The Shining, which I rewatched as research for my haunted manuals series.
** The inner life manifest as supernatural in The Shining: Are the ghosts real? Yes. No. Maybe. **
The Shining takes the inner psychological reality of the dynamics of domestic abuse and makes it visible on the outside as ghosts, visions, and supernatural powers. It doesn’t particularly heighten and certainly doesn’t exaggerate the objective reality of abuse and intimate partner violence. The inner reality of the violence is visible along with its usual outer manifestation.

Arthur Schnitzler’s 1926 novel Traumnovelle (AKA Dream Story) was the basis for Stanley Kubrick’s film Eyes Wide Shut. Quite similar to the film (including a conspiracy theory angle). A must-read for fans of Kubrick or of decadent fiction.
