On this day in 1959 Billie Holiday took leave of this earthly burden and left her mortal coil behind. The Federal Bureau of Narcotics had been targeting her since at least 1939. She was arrested and handcuffed for drug possession as she lay dying, her hospital room was raided and she was placed under police guard.

A few weeks ago I made Quince jelly. It was the first and probably the last time I will ever make it. But the science behind it fascinated me. Such a strange fruit, inedible and hard until cooked. From a place near the Caspian Sea originally. It leaves a waxy brown stain on chopping boards but when cooked smells divine. Like apple, pear and roses.
