@Em0nM4stodon @ablackcatstail @GeePawHill Honestly, most of those homes are inconvenient suburban garbage (groceries, work, medical assistance or really anything without a car? Perish the thought, it's #CarDependency cult land here) and most housing programs have a bunch of conditions attached.
Americans (and Canadians) for some utterly incomprehensible reason seem allergic to #panelki and #MixedUseZoning.
#cardependency #suburbansprawl #urbanism #panelki #mixedusezoning
@izaya The solution illustrated: https://www.zupagrafika.com/shop/panelki
Also fuck #CarDependency and #SuburbanSprawl
#cardependency #suburbansprawl #urbanism
@saana @AmyZenunim Where would you even put those? #SuburbanSprawl has no third places or open public spaces and strict euclidean zoning means businesses are forbidden from mixing in with other residential buildings.
If that sounds like you're making a #CarDependent hellhole you cannot survive in without a car? Well that's because that's exactly what you're making.
@rigatonimonster The best part is building out all those roads to start with while knowing full well they'll be unable to afford maintenance but the #SuburbanSprawl and/or rural meme must continue.
@chrismak @kagan @mekkaokereke Somewhat relatedly, the sprawling car-dependent human-hostile infrastructure doesn't exactly help children interact offline either.
Especially not when "hanging out" is practically outlawed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHlpmxLTxpw).

Just discovered Frank Laundry via his video on #WalkableCities, urban #Gentrification, white flight, redlining, #Communities, #SuburbanSprawl, the (old) New Deal, and more.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhq6MsYxbkU
He covers a lot of ground. The editing is tight, his schtick is funny, and he has fun with transitions that keep your attention. If his other videos are anything like this one I have a new favorite.
Kudos to F.D. Signifier who makes a point of elevating other creators and introduced me to Frank.

@qag Even if they don't care for the social arguments (which they really should it has an important part in the mental health crisis), the economical arguments alone justify abandoning the suburban pattern of development entirely.

@quixoticgeek @jameslove @martinvermeer @baekdal Environmental devastation from #SuburbanSprawl is responsible for a lot of it too.
@LinuxAndYarn @emmah It could also be asked as "why aren't we building enough housing?"
Which in USA and #Canada has some interesting answers about #zoning.
Seriously, have a look at #Vancouver. Is it really any surprise the apartments are impossibly expensive?

Not all #suburbia is #sprawl, but far too much of it is. The defining characteristic of #SuburbanSprawl is car-dependency, which results from bad decisions around density, land-use, budgeting, design, infrastructure etc.
#Suburbs don’t have to be car-dependant. We’ve just chosen to make them that way so far. We can do suburbs differently.

The average INDIVIDUAL U.S. resident now has as much living space in their home as entire families shared in the 1950s. That’s 3X as much space per person. We’ve convinced ourselves we NEED all that extra space, and the excessive stuff we fill it with that we likely wouldn’t buy if we didn’t have the space we thought we needed to fill. We really don’t. Something to keep in mind with #SolarPunk is that #SustainableDevelopment tends not to look like towering sky-scrapers with a few trees growing on their side, but rather starts with smart land-use. Car-dependent #SuburbanSprawl is not smart land-use and is not #sustainable, it's a waste of #ArableLand.

Those choosing (and for many — not all, but many — it IS a choice) to live in the heavily subsidized suburbs are NOT ALSO entitled to free-flow car traffic capacity (aka an “easy car commute”) into the city at the expense of the taxes, health, safety & quality of life of city-dwellers.

Suburban Sprawl costs 38% more public money upfront & 10% more ongoing public cost than compact infill growth, with only 1/10th the ongoing tax revenue, according to the Smart Growth America report discussed in this Bloomberg Citylab article.
#Sprawl is REALLY expensive for everyone.
