There is a personal allegory for me around the rigid and, often, seemingly absurd division between the cities. Both sides maintaining strict observance of their cultures and being extra careful to self-police in the grey areas. Powerful, faceless aggression striking like lightning when the socio-structural barrier is breached...

I continue to explore being #trans and finding myself wanting more to be an expat of both (or maybe dual citizen) than simply move.

Only a few chapters into Miellville's The City and The City and I'm enamored with this book already.

A detective noir story in a fascinating setting. You're dropped into a familiar opening crime scene and pick up the customs of this sadly beautiful place by the alien concerns of an otherwise routine investigation. The lingo is explained over time but not all up front -- you'll see a word in use a few times as the context builds around it and tightens up its definition.

I'd forgotten how much I loved this book. Patricia Highsmith mashed up with Kafka. Set in two cities that can only be seperated through an exhausting, continuous process of censorship.
