Has anyone experience with running #TheFantasyTrip as a roleplaying game? I am currently enamoured with the system, but I usually prefer theater-of-the-mind to using miniatures. Does this work well with TFT? And if so, how? Any advice is highly appreciated. #rpg #advice
For those keeping score, about 10 kilos were #GURPS books, about 5 kilos were #TheFantasyTrip, and about 5 were #CallOfCthulhu and #DeltaGreen. Something for everyone!
Incidentally, if you are in the #Seattle area and have a hankering for some #DnD-ish rules and adventure books, believe me, I can hook you up, for a belated #EarthDay.

First things first: You should play what inspired you, lest the inspiration vanishes again.
But since you showed interest I'd still like to second WanderingBeekeper's opinion. WotC has been very hostile to small creators, people of colour and queer folks over the last years.
No need to get into the hobby's politics yet and obviously there's no harm in using stuff that's already been bought and paid for, but when it comes to spending money, there are many other options, many of which do not cost any money to start with and less than D&D going onwards.
Some free games suggestions:
#Ironsworn has a lot less rules baggage allowing you to focus on the characters and their relationships and cool specials:

#TheFantasyTrip does almost the opposite and the basic "Fighter" version is free too:
https://warehouse23.com/products/the-fantasy-trip-melee-pdf
#GURPS is a time-honoured veteran that can do pretty-much anything, including more realistic fantasy if that's your cup. The Lite version is free too:
https://warehouse23.com/products/gurps-lite-fourth-edition
#BasicFantasy has loads of free stuff and might be feel familiar for your friends that have been doing this for years or decades:

#FateCore is very flexible and can get pretty close to the feel of movies and over-the-top adventuring. It has a lot of free or pay-what-you-want resources and settings:

Sorry for the wall of the text. That went longer than I intended. πβ

Is it just me, or does The Fantasy Trip have some Ultima vibes? If I wanted to run a game in Britannia (Ultima 4 to 9), TFT would be a great fit. Hmm... π€ #ultima #thefantasytrip #rpg

@UbiquitousRat If you like older GURPS material, you might like to take a look at #TheFantasyTrip. From what I've see even the new version is pretty much proto-GURPS (with a huge focus on combat, unfortunately),
@pen_and_pixel Since it doesn't have to be D&D, you can try those:
#GURPS Lite is free and goes for mostly skill-based stuff adventuring that maps nicely on real-world situations and narrative realism, e.g. you need to learn how to fight with a sword.
There are also other freebies, especially the free intro adventure Caravan to Ein Arris.
Does not do magic in the free version, but if you feel you need to "level" up the the Dungeon Fantasy RPG Boxed set is $40 in PDF.

#TheFantasyTrip (#TFT) Melee is basically a quirky old-school version of GURPS. It's free too and does not include magic either. Does not map so nicely to reality / expectations, especially if you level up to include Wizard ($ 7.50). The quirkiness might be more interesting to an 11-year-old than GURPS' straight approach. As the name implies it's heavily combat-focused, though.
There are a couple of free adventure modules on DriveThruRPG. Search for "Powercell Games".

#Ironsworn is also free and has a few free additions. It is more narrative-driven and includes some mechanics for cooperative GM-less play and solo play. There is a standard setting included (which GURPS and TFT lack), but it seems a little dark (not excessively and definitely not grimdark). Full disclosure: I am only a third through the rulebook, but it is looking good in a way that few free products do and it feels tighter to me than say Powered by the Apocalypse games. It's a decidedly more modern approach that uses tack marks and filled out dots on your advantages than counting points. It is considerably more reading than either of the other two suggestions.

If you're thinking of spending a few bucks there are many more options and if you want to go more into the Urban Fantasy genre, there are things like Kids on Bikes / Brooms and Tales from the Loop that might be interesting, though often playing kids is not what kids want to do. Ponyfinder might also be of interest, though I think this can be a money sink.
I haven't played any explicitly kiddie roleplaying games, but I think at that age starting with something she doesn't quickly outgrow might be best. There are quite some options, though.
Edit: You might want to base your choice of system on how complicated the board games are that you 11-year-old enjoys and how much time she spends on making up complicated stories about characters in books. If both are on the low end, definitely rule out GURPS.

I played a bit of Melee on my lunchbreak today, mostly to refamiliarize myself with the game after not playing for a year.
I took our party's crossbowman, Guilliaume, and set him at one end, then sent the party's other six melee-oriented characters after him, one at a time.
Guilliaume picked off the first five handily, but the sixth got him when he ran out of ammo.
All hail our new champion, Skender the Markedly Unpleasant!
@argent @arossp FWIW, heβs got it back, and thereβs a fair amount of support, both new material and cleaned-up, edited, older material.
I still prefer #GURPS but if you want something lighter, #TheFantasyTrip is judt fine.
@armoredkitten While I find it too simple for my tastes, there is also the newly-revived and supported #TheFantasyTrip from #SteveJacksonGames. It's a distant ancestor of #GURPS, but far simpler. #TTRPG

(Behind a few days with all the holiday todo so going to play catch up)
So for holiday s%!ts & giggles I am going to do a random roll, pull whatever number it is off my shelf, and highlight that game. Letβs see what comes up.
Dec 26th Roll:
The Fantasy Trip: Death Test & Death Test 2 by Steve Jackson Games
βThe mighty Thorsz is hiring guards. But the test is a killer. You have to make it through his labyrinth full of traps, monsters, and other would-be guards!β

I will never not be in love with the character creation process of Barbarians of Lemuria. The speed & depth combo is pretty unparalleled as far as I'm concerned.
Mini Six comes close. And I used to be able to knock out a TFT character as fast. But beyond those, not much comes close on both speed and depth.
