As I understand it, in the US, the list of federal crimes is so large that there exists no single authoritative count of their total number. There are simply too many crimes for any single individual to comprehend each and every one.

I remember reading that the last time a scholar attempted to get a rigorous sense of the scale of criminal offences (some years ago), they concluded that (a) the task was too difficult and (b) basically every adult in the US (and plenty outside it) has undoubtedly broken federal law at some point in the last week or so.

Which means that the selective application/enforcement of those laws is left in the hands of police and prosecutors, who are thus given an incredibly wide scope of operation. When they could arrest/charge almost anyone, the pattern of who they choose to arrest is illuminating.

(Not that the death-machine's nature as a death-machine requires further illumination for many people. Though for some still living in a liberal fantasy of â„¢, it still does.)

This all only serves to underscore your point. Everyone is on the cusp of being criminalised (i.e. becoming a target of interest to the carceral state) the moment we become a noticeable inconvenience to the agenda of the powerful.
