Rewatched the first #Evangelion #Rebuild last night (ok I made it roughly halfway through and had to go to bed lol) but I was surprised how much i’m enjoying it. Sure, a lot of it is just flashy reworkings of the first six episodes but that’s fine actually. Lots of digital ink was spilled after #ThriceUponATime came out that the final movie “confirms the loop theory”- but going back to the first movie it’s amazing how the whole Loop thing was evident right from the jump. Starting with the shot of the sea being red.

Even the nature of the movie (essentially being a retelling of ep 1-6) works in favor or the “theory*” we see Shinji and co. in familiar situations, going through events and making decisions that we’ve seen them make before. Even the iconic first “get in the robot!” scene isn’t so much tense this time around as it is tragic. The audience isn’t wondering if he’ll pilot the Eva- that’s a forgone conclusion. What we do know is how much pain and misery this will cause him. So instead of a tense “what will happen?” scene, we get sad pianos as Shinji once again decides to pilot Evangelion Unit 01, damning his soul.
The audience’s experience watching these events unfold in a familiar and predictable, but still somewhat novel, way is echoed by Gendo’s meeting with Seele. All these events are unfolding according to an ancient plan (I always felt like Seele’s Dead Sea Scrolls was more guidebook than prophecy) (in the audiences case our ancient scrolls being the 1995 amine Neon Genesis Evangelion
