Possible way forward? Going back to the drawing board, accounting for the @EUCouncil 's criticism, and ditching the idea of #transnationallists for a more coherent EU-wide voting system, such as the Improved Bundestag Method. 👇

While I have been very critical of parts of the proposal (especially with regards to #transnationallists), this feels like a major blow for the efforts to turn 27 national elections into one real European election — once again confirming the @EUCouncil as the main stumbling block for Europeanisation.

Pretty big slap in the European Parliament's face by the @EUCouncil, opposing any and all measures put forward to Europeanise European elections — no #transnationallists, no #Spitzenkandidat, no single voting day, no harmonisation of voting modalities, etc.

On institutional reform, strengthening the European Parliament is strikingly missing. Enhancing the EU by 30/36 MS, keeping the upper threshold of 751 MEPs and respecting the principle that each vote carries the same weight means: #transnationallists. It could have been mentioned

#transnationallists will mean a democratic perversion in which the the leaders of the biggest countries that dominate European parties will decide who will be candidate from countries and parties which are not their own, in which places and even if they will be candidates.
