Thinking just a bit ago about how #USAmerican "Have a Nice Day" is and a sketch I watched this morning about an American tourist couple in a London coffee shop. They were Midwestern and SO damned *fake-cheery!

"Cheese Sandwich" was the alpha and omega of the breakfast menu. 😂

@lain_7 @radicalaipod @shengokai this seems again like an #USAmerican focus to me. My remark shouldn't be about "fix it yourself". it was all about culture, a culture of "here's a (real!) gift", "let's get together" and "we are not selling your data", "you are not the cash cow for us", "you are not our business model", "we don't try to make money from your communication needs" and "no it's not the business of a crazy billionaire deciding what he likes as free speech and what not" and "no we are not serving any major company with your profile to feed the marketing industry".
Mastodon is mainly made by a guy from Germany and his non-profit(!) organization. If you talk about different cultures, I think this is worth mentioning.

@radicalaipod @shengokai I wonder if this is an #USAmerican thing or why I couldn't find any of the words "#free" or "#open" in the whole talk? Isn't one of the main advantages of the #fediverse and #activitypub (#mastodon ...) it's #foss! You are not only allowed to have your own instance, you are encouraged(!) to have one. The protocol is forever free to use and the #software is free and #opensource too and so are some apps as well. It's all very uncommercial. (Wonderful for someone from Europe btw. ☺️)

#Thanksgiving to me is a very complicated US holiday, with a very toxic indigenous-erasing and #USAmerican mythical history, but also serving an important positive social function of urging folks to practice gratitude and to connect with loved ones over good food.

My own family's experience pulls me in both directions.
