Joo retinitis pigmentosa aiheuttaa nopeutetun solukuoleman, eli silmät vanhenevat nopeammin vrt terveet silmät.

Tällä hetkellä tilanne on tämä:
- n. 20 asteen näkökenttä (yhtä reikäinen kuin reikäjuusto)
- vas. silmässä hyvin pieni orastava kaihin alku (ei haittaa näkemistä tällä hetkellä)
- retinitikseen liittyvät näköongelmat (hämäräsokeus, lumisokeus, heikentynyt kontrastin erottelukyky, heikentynyt värien erottelukyky, näkökentässä saattaa esiintyä aave-makkaroita, varjoharhoja, silmät tottuvat/adaptoituu valosta pimeään hyvin hitaasti)

Mitä tulee näöntarkkuuteen, niin pystyy tässä vielä näpertelyhommia tekemään, mutta valon määrällä on suuri merkitys ja plussaa ois jos saisi valaisimen kanssa suurennuslasin esim. käsitöitä varten jossa vaaditaan näköä tavallista enemmän. Koneella ei ole tällä hetkellä tekstinsuurennusohjelmia, mutta esim. verkkosivustojen ja IRC tekstit on suurennettu muutama pykälä isommaksi lukemisen helpottamiseksi. Kuvien katselu onnistuu ongelmitta, samoin videoita pystyy seuraamaan. Mutta jos kuva on hyvin tumma, niin saatan pyytää @rolle a tai muksua kuvailemaan mitä kuvassa näkyy.

Welcome new and old! Instead of the usual mini bio that you can read on my profile anyway, let me introduce you to Usher Syndrome, the “leading” cause of deaf blindness and an unwelcome part of my family.

Usher Syndrome causes varying degrees of progressive deafness and blindness. Many, many advances in diagnosis, remediation, and treatments have improved the outlook for newly diagnosed individuals (including #CochlearImplants for hearing) in recent decades, but there’s no effective treatment for the vision loss yet. Progress with #CRISPR #GeneTherapy #Optogenetics and other areas is impressive and will undoubtedly lead to effective treatments.

#Twitter and social media in general have been key tools in assembling the community for education, fundraising, study recruitment and research. Hopefully #Mastodon can become another tool we use.
