It's been fun figuring out what vegetable plants will and will not grow in various sized containers. Most die almost immediately or look so sickly that I feel terrible for them. Some thrive. And then there are the “bonsai vegetables”: plants that seem to be perfectly happy, but grow unusually small.
These nasu (Japanese eggplant) fall into that last category. The plants are about a third the size of normal, flowered and fruited way early, and the fruit are almost bite sized. Unfortunately the also don't taste very good, possibly because I'm misjudging when to pick them. But they are quite pretty.

Believe it or not, these are peppers and not xenomorph eggs or some kind of weird succulent. These pods are from a cross between a Mattapeño and another mutant variety.

I'm 8 days into a little experiment comparing store bought seed starter mix to some unsanitized sphagnum based mix I made.

Garden Update: 6 tomato plants of differing varieties all full of fruit just starting to go red, Portuguese peppers and bell peppers all ready for harvest, French beans & butternut squash soon!
We ate the broccoli + pattypan squashes already, getting 2 cucumbers a week, and we have so much basil I think I might start a pesto business on the side!
The chickens are now 17 weeks old, so hopefully we get some eggs in the next few weeks too!
