I'm reading Gerald Clarke's serviceable biography on Judy Garland, who may or may not be inserted into the alt-1955 epic I'm now writing. But even so, I've always felt great empathy for her sad life.

Aside from the book reminding me of Louis Mayer's disgusting behavior (he was as bad as Harvey Weinstein), I had no idea how much of a dick Victor Fleming was to poor Judy Garland. Apparently Judy would giggle after every take. And Garland, only 16 when she made THE WIZARD OF OZ and already contending with her developing breasts being rigidly taped and manacled to appear more "girl-like," giggled after every take on OZ. Fleming's "solution" was to slap her hard across the face and scream at her.

Weirdly, Clarke didn't source this in the endnotes. But this strikes me as plausible.

Child abuse, man. What a nasty time.
