Almost no one who talks publicly about how to live “a good life” even mentions how we & the systems we fund treat non-human sentients.
Just recorded a great conversation with film-maker & writer Jay Shapiro about whether we need a secular, sentiocentric #virtueethics (TLDR: yes, we do).
#Sentientism itself is neutral on ethical system... but if you like virtue ethics, you need a secular, sentiocentric one.
If kindness and compassion are virtues - we need to extend them to all sentient beings.
Virtue ethics is a philosophical approach that emphasizes the character and habits of the moral actor, rather than rules or consequences, as the key element of ethical thinking. While we are always concerned about the consequences of our actions, by thinking about what kind of human we would like to be, we can often get ahead of the moral issues we face if we think holistically about what our purpose is and what we owe to each other.

@philosophy I think the virtue of patience would be a very interesting disposition to research, and it is central to the story The Carrot Seed.
A boys plants a carrot seed and despite the doubts of everyone, it goes on to grow into a large carrot. I like that the boy never said a word in response to his doubters, demonstrating the virtue of silence which can be found on Ben Franklin's list of virtues. It also teaches knowledge and faith in natural processes. #p4c #VirtueEthics #science
#VirtueEthics A while back I went through the New Testament and found every sin list and virtue list I could. I grouped them. The virtue lists are very consistent. I phrase them:
*Humility before God
*Drive for righteousness and restorative justice
*Embrace of truth
*Love
*Joy
*Building community through peacemaking, reconciliation and covenant
*Kindness, gentleness and generosity
*Faithfulness and self-control
*Patience and hope
Every sin I understand seems to just be an absence of a virtue.
