@yassie_j I mean I hate #CAPTCHAs as they are #ableist af and don't even work for anything but exclude #blind and #VisionImpaired people.

But since #bots are a problem, I can't just complain about #ValueRemoving #RentSeekers like #CloudFlare without proposing any alternative methods...

Today I found myself thinking about #screenReaders and stuff. Like I've made a point to #altText all my image posts (though I boost posts without it) as I consider it a matter of just straight up politeness.

... But not being #visionImpaired myself (I have mild astigmatism, a pair of glasses fixes it, doesn't count :P), I found myself wondering how much good alt text on certain posts actually does for those folks. Would love to hear from someone who *is*.

Cuz like. Sure, with a meme or a screenshot, a text description is great because 90% of the point of the picture is in the text it contains anyway. Same for a comic, turn it into a narrative text.

But what about straight-up art posts, or photographs? Does a text description of the contents help at all?

And like. Is there a proper way to write them? Cuz if so I want to learn it.

Reminder that not everyone who needs #captions is #blind.

People on text-only web-browsers, data-saving connections, #translation software, #ScreenReaders, and people who are simply #VisionImpaired use these sites on a text-only basis, but are capable of looking at the #images / #art. For them, the #caption helps them decide if they want to.

For three months after my #COVID infection started in my eyes, I could see once the blindfold came off, but still it took a lot of work.

Whilst #screenshots are the easiest to do, I do wish most applications would at the very least support #tty output and at least he somewhat useable on a braille screen and/or with TTS.

#WhatsMissing is making #accessibility a priority and do proper #testing by #VisionImpaired and #blind people!

They state that they want to become "the world's best #LanguageLearning #App.

But, if they take this seriously, then - in my humble opinion - they also should aim to become best-in-class in #accessibility, don't you think?

@atheistbot I love most of what i've seen you post, & have boosted several, but... i do have a degree of hesitation. Most if not all of your pics have no Alt-Text, for #VisionImpaired peeps. I feel the quandary.

I've been tweeting / tooting (ugh) without grammar and minimal punctuation, but it occurs to me that...

It's probably better for #accessibility and #ScreenReaders if I use grammar and punctuation, right?

So, I'm thinking I should always write that way... even though it inevitably will make some people think I'm weird or uptight.

Any #blind #VisionImpaired etc. users on fedi that play MUDs that can tell me how they do so on Linux (or at least with tools compatible with Linux)? Maybe a long shot but if I'd find answers anywhere it'd be here. I've always been fascinated with the ways and tools in which blind/vision impaired folks play video games, because most video games do very little to be accessible even when some of them totally could be, and I know some MUDs have significant blind userbases. I'm probably going to have a hard time playing video games for a bit after prk lasik and it made me think about trying out a MUD through text to speech. I just don't know if the answer is looking for a good terminal reader or if there's specialized software for this exact purpose.

My new year #resolution after walking down a guided #walking track with eyes closed reading the #Braille notices and finding one that I interpreted, because my Braille isn't good, to say "Don't Touch", is to ask all photographers, especially of wildlife, to #CaptionEverything in #CamelCase so those who are #VisionImpaired can enjoy them the same as everyone else.

I have come to the point where I think to not do so is #Ablist.

Please #boost this and see if we can't have the whole community thinking about the whole community, not just the able.

#CamelCase #hashtags can be read by screen readers which are used by our #VisionImpaired #Brethren throughout the world where the technology can be afforded.
