Ash fall and pyroclastic deposits in Ol Njorowa Gorge, Kenya.

Via the U.S. Geological Survey, on Tuesday, a small debris flow was detected by several of Mount Rainier's lahar monitoring stations, likely the result of an outburst of water from the South Tahoma Glacier that grew into a debris flow, which isn't surprising given the current heat wave in WA.

Finding up-to-date info about the new volcanic eruption in Iceland makes me think back to the heyday of volcano Twitter. In 2019, I wrote a feature for a now defunct Medium magazine where I interviewed volcanologists, emergency managers and people behind certain volcano Twitter accounts, including Glacier Peak in WA and Mt Shishaldin in AK ("a partner at a New York City tech startup who has long been fascinated by volcanoes").

While the Yellowstone Caldera gets all the public attention, an older and smaller caldera in New Mexico also has an important story to tell. In fact, the Valles Caldera is where scientists first sorted out the workings of volcanic systems that produce large explosive eruptions that make calderas.

... This makes it difficult to infer the actual volume of magma and to measure the complete extent of such eruptions. In particular, this is because the deposits of the most violent historical eruptions are partially or completely under water, which makes geological investigations difficult. This has also prevented the accurate sizing of past eruptions and thus a reliable risk assessment.

... The new microbe, a cyanobacterium, was discovered in September in volcanic seeps near the Italian island of Vulcano, where the water contains high levels of CO₂. The researchers said the bug turned CO₂ into biomass faster than any other known cyanobacteria.
