I didn’t realize today was his birthday. He was from Mississippi County, Arkansas, across the river from where I live.
This picture was taken one day before my birthday in 2003. I’ve always felt an affinity for Johnny Cash, especially as someone recovering from addiction myself.

This is a high school portrait of my friend John. He was a caring healthcare professional, a good friend who always had his friend’s backs, and a loving father to his beautiful daughter. John loved music, especially 70s and 80s Heavy Metal. He was a deep thinker and saw the beauty in our world and in others.

Four years ago, John died as a result of an overdose. Like many people who suffer with addiction, John suffered from emotional pain as a result of traumatic life experiences.

I wish I could have helped him more, but I know that his death is not a reflection of any personal failings, mine or his. His addiction was a symptom of a mental health crisis and his use was a effort to heal his pain.

He was a light that burned bright in our world and this earth is a dimmer place without him. As a society, we need to do better to help people who are suffering in silence.

My primary DOC was alcohol, but I have struggled with addiction to other depressants as well. I participate in #NA and #AA, where I have found amazing companions on my recovery journey! Unbelievable day! I was given a proclamation by the Mayor of Athens, OH proclaiming today Susan D. day! I’m retiring at the end of THIS year. I’ll continue doing some consulting, but no more of the day to day stuff involved with running a non-profit.
